If you want to check your credit history online for free, you have two ways of doing that. You can either go to the authorized website, annualcreditreport.com or through the other credit reporting websites.

Why you should check credit history

Your credit history or report is a collection of all your credit-related activities from current and previous bank check credit history free onlineaccounts, current and previous credit card details to mortgages. It takes into account every minute detail including late bill payments. Some entities then judge you by this record. Let’s say you want to get a house loan, the lender will check your credit history to help him decide on whether or not to grant you one and it can even determine how good of a deal they will give you. Using your credit report, these agencies can tell if you are a risk to them or not. So use your free report to determine if you should and how you could improve your score.

I can give you two reasons why you should check your credit history. One is to check to make sure that everything under your name is correct and second, to make sure that you are not a victim of identity theft. Misinformation can cause your score to drop and you may be declined a loan, insurance or mortgage for that very reason. That is why you should make sure that the details on your credit history are correct. Many people have detected identity theft by the checking their credit report. If your social security number, address or other personal information is inaccurate, then you must file a dispute to get all of your credit reports corrected.

Where to check credit history free online

As I mentioned, you have two options in getting your free credit report. It is highly advisable that you go to the Annual Credit Report website before subscribing to any other website. It is the only website that is authorized by the government to give out credit reports and by law, you are entitled to one free credit report every 12 months. This does not include the credit score though, you will have to pay extra for it. Getting your free credit report is very simple. All you have to do is go to the website and provide all the necessary identifying information about you. This includes Social Security number, work information and personal information but never credit card details. When you complete application, you will be sent three credit reports. These are credit reports from each of the three official credit reporting bureaus (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion).

The other credit reporting websites where you could get a free credit report are not authorized by the government to do so. Because of this, take extra precaution when filling out their subscription. Some of these websites will claim that they need your credit card details in order for them to locate your credit history. Yet there are those that do not require credit card information. When you give out such details, you are risking getting billed. Avoid giving out this information. If you should proceed with one of these websites, be sure to read their terms and conditions very carefully.

How To Establish Good Credit History

Having a good credit history can mean saving considerable amounts of money and having a fall back when financial crisis hits. Your detailed credit history will be viewable in your credit report and summed up in your credit score. I said a good credit history can lead to being able to save a good amount of money because insurance premiums and loan interest rates depend on it. If you have a bad credit history, you will be paying a bigger premium than when you have good credit history. You can even be rejected when applying for a loan based on low credit scores and negative history. That’s why it is very important to maintain a good credit history. Here’s how:

Bank account

In the eyes of creditors and lenders, those who have no bank accounts are non-existent. It is a way of determining how good, or bad, you manage your finances. The longer your bank account is in existence, the more reliable you will seem. Given that you maintain the minimum balance of course. Whether it be a checking account or a savings account, it will increase your credibility.

Credit cards

Having too many credit cards can be a bad thing for most people but having at least two credit cards can add a few points to your credit score especially if you have had it for years. It will show the creditors that you responsibly pay your bills on time. Even if you are just a student, it is advisable to get a credit card. You don’t have to max it out every single month, just use it for a few purchases to keep it active.

Credit

In the practical world, paying for everything in cash and not having a single credit or loan means you can actually afford the life you are living and that is extremely impressive. That is not the same in the eyes of creditors though. A loan or credit is a determining factor in how responsible you are with money and can show that you, in fact, are capable of paying your premium and fees on time. Some people get loans even if they can afford it outright just for the sake of improving their credit history.

Bills, bills, bills

Managing credit cards, loans and bank accounts can be overwhelming. Keep yourself organized by writing down bill due dates and be sure to never miss a payment. Missing a deadline can have a significantly adverse affect on your credit history and FICO score.

Building a good credit history takes time. At the very least, it will take a few months to establish a consistent pattern of on time payment history. That’s why it is better to start early even if you’re not thinking about the importance of your credit report, yet. You never know when you’re going to need it.
